PRESS RELEASE

The January Arts Event features the Central Iowa Brass Quintet on Saturday August 23, 2008 at 7:00 p. m. at Hope United Methodist Church, 2202 South 3rd Ave., Marshalltown, Iowa. The group is one of the premier brass quintets in Central Iowa, formed by members of the Central Iowa Symphony based in Ames, Iowa. Featured will be a sampling from many varied styles of music including early to modern classical, classic rock, traditional wedding favorites, Broadway selections, and jazz. Members of the ensemble include Jason Kirke of State Center on lead trumpet, Larry Hansen of Dayton on second trumpet, Pam Schwab of Ames on French Horn, Pat McFarland of Nevada on trombone, and Jim Kilmer of Marshalltown on tuba.

Jason Kirke, trumpet, flugelhorn, piccolo trumpet – Jason is currently a Certified Financial Planner™ professional with Financial Partners Group, an independent financial advisory firm in West Des Moines. While obtaining a BME at the UNI School of Music in Cedar Falls, IA, he played trumpet under the direction of Randy Grabowski in the Wind Symphony and Jazz Band One; which recorded Requiem (1996) and Conversations (1997), respectively. He currently plays principal trumpet in the Central Iowa Symphony. He has played lead trumpet with many community bands and theater groups and is often requested to play special music for weddings and churches. Jason also doubles on Euphonium in the low brass ensemble Back Row Boys.

Larry Hansen, trumpet and flugelhorn – Larry is a retired public school band director. He plays trumpet in the Ames Municipal Band, Fort Dodge Area Symphony, and was a member of the Tarnished Brass brass quintet. He is a substitute with the Central Iowa Symphony Orchestra and the Jive for Five brass quintet. Larry also plays in pit orchestras for area musicals and has performed in ensembles that accompany groups such as the Ames Choral Society and the Fort Dodge Choral Society.

Pamela Schwab, horn – Pam is principal partner and chief engineer for Civil Software Design, LLC. Pam is principal horn with the Central Iowa Symphony Orchestra. She has played with the Collegiate Brass, Fort Dodge Symphony Orchestra, Ames Municipal Band, Central College Wind Ensemble and numerous other orchestras, bands and ensembles. Pam also plays hammered dulcimer with the Clear Creek Trio and 88 Strings ensembles

Pat McFarland, trombone & euphonium – Pat works for the Plant Engineering group at the 3M plant in Ames designing control systems. He is the principal trombonist with the Central Iowa Symphony Orchestra as well as the founding member of the trombone quartet, Nevadian Brass. Pat also plays euphonium with the Back Row Boys tuba/euphonium ensemble and trombone with the Nevada First United Methodist Church Praise Band, Nevada Community Band, and the CJC Big Band in Des Moines. He has also played with ACTORS, Nevada Fine Arts, the Don Hoy Orchestra, the Roy White Big Band, the Des Moines Symphony, the Des Moine s Big Band, the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines backup band, the Des Moines Opera, and the Variety Club of Iowa Telethon broadcast band.

Jim Kilmer, tuba – Jim is the Postmaster for the city of Nevada. He plays tuba in the Central Iowa Symphony Orchestra, Marshalltown Community Band, the Ames Municipal Band.and founded the Back Row Boys tuba/euphonium ensemble. Jim has played in numerous solo and ensemble performances in his place of worship, Central Christian Church of Marshalltown. Jim has also played in the Fort Dodge Area Symphony Orchestra, the Karl King Band of Fort Dodge, The greater Des Moines Community Band, has subbed with Dow Jones & the Averages, the Urbandale community band, Dixie and the Rhythm Ramblers, and the Ackley German Band- to name a few. On occasion he sings with the Marshall town Mens Chorus and has performed with the Marshall Area Chorale Society in several offerings of the Messiah over the years.

Refreshments will be served following the program. Any free will offerings received will be applied to the installation of a pipe organ. The Second Saturday Arts Festival is sponsored by Hope UM Church. Admission is free.
