Music and Art
JOHN'S BIO
I grew up in Estes Park and Denver, Colorado, the first born of Fred Sr., an engineer with the Bureau of Reclamation, and Marie, a home maker and artist. After Fred's passing in 1962, Marie supported her children through her art by marketing custom stationery, bridge tallies, custom silk screening, and ceramics through shops throughout the Rocky Mountain and west coast areas. My late brother, Fred Jr. and my sister, Kathy (Devlin) O Connor worked with our mother for many years producing her invention of "weed pottery". I married Carole in 1963 and have three daughters, a professional trumpeter, and two engineers, along with four young grandsons. I began piano lessons in 2nd grade and hold a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, a BA in Music Education, and an MA in Piano Performance. I taught instrumental music in the local public school for 37 years and have been retired for six years. I am an active member of the Central Iowa Chapter of the Iowa Music Teachers Association (IMTA), the state affiliate of MTNA (Music Teachers National Association), the most prestigious private music teacher organization; a life member of the National Education Association; the Iowa Bandmasters Association; the Central Iowa Chapter of the American Guild of Organists; the Central Iowa Choral Society; the Central Iowa Art Association; and the Marshall County Arts and Culture Alliance. I divide my time between pottery, an avocation since about 1970, organ, piano, and production of the Second Saturday Arts Concerts series at Hope UMC. I am organist and pianist at Hope United Methodist Church in Marshalltown, Iowa and I have given 3-1/2 piano recitals or concerts in the past 6 years, and am planning another this year. I play classical piano and organ. I have an interest in other genres such as Jazz and although I do not play other than classical, I do teach those. I have taught private piano for 43 years and have found that a knowledge of classics and those technical requirements well serve all styles of music. The majority of my students are kids ranging from 2nd grade through seniors, however I do teach adult students, and I have often taken transfer students who are ready for more advanced technic and literature. My college training emphasized relaxation technic which I use quite successfully to help eliminate repetitive motion injury in hands and allow for the fastest technic and endurance. My wife, Carole, and I are at home in Le Grand, Iowa.
